The Work Goes On

This aim seems far more achievable now that it has been for more than 50 years. Yet it is important to remember that at the start of the 21st century all the traditional British breeds are still classified as “at risk” or worse. One important step is being undertaken to ensure against future disasters with the establishment of a frozen semen bank for the traditional breeds. Working in partnership with the RBST and with funding from the Trust’s ReGENEration appeal this project is one of the very few silver linings to emerge from the chaos of the Foot and Mouth epidemic of 2001.

Thanks to the efforts of a small number of pedigree breeders these traditional breeds have been saved from extinction. Only pedigree stock are recognised as part of the conservation effort which is why the BPA has adopted the slogan “Without a pedigree its just another pig.” Britain continues to maintain more pedigree pig breeds than any other developed country but our traditional breeds remain at risk. More work is needed to ensure that populations rise to the point where they are secure. Britain’s unique genetic heritage is worth preserving for future generations.
