Breed Representative Candidate for Large Whites
Nick Kiddy
The Withersfield herd has been breeding pedigree Large Whites for over 75 years, the herd was started by my great grandfather in 1944 with the purchase of Risby Blackberry from the Burrell family.
I am the 4th generation to be involved in the breeding of pedigree Large Whites. Our Pig unit is based on the 10-acre family farm working in partnership with my parents. We run an indoor system, using a modern farrowing house, 40% of our crates are freedom farrowing. Some sows also run outside. We run a total of 90 sows with Large Whites being over half of those kept.
Our aim is to sell breeding stock to other farmers, A.I stations and overseas. All finished pigs go to a wholesale butcher for direct sale to butcher shops and we also do hog roasts and direct sales of meat to the public.
We work hard to preserve the breeding lines that we have, we select on growth rate litter size and conformation. These are the traits which are required by commercial pig farmers to improve their herds. We have recently help move a rare line for which we were the only herd to a herd in Northern Ireland, spreading genetics across the country is important as well as keeping these breeding lines to help with genetic diversity within the breed. It’s important to promote the breed to new keepers, the Large White has many great attributes and these need to be promoted.
I feel I am qualified to fulfil the role as I have a great passion for the Large White breed and a history of keeping them on a commercial basis, we have a great history of keeping them for the last 75 years and I hope we will carry on for many years to come.
I have been involved in agriculture all my life, worked on various farms and pig units whilst studying at collage. I have worked for a conservation charity managing their livestock for 7 years then went on to be a farm manager for a Longhorn beef farm for nearly 4 years before returning to work with my parents on the pig unit and take on a county council farm as well. I am a partner in the business and do all day-to-day work on the unit, I am responsible for the sows, weaners, growers and finishers, my father does the farrowing house.
Breed Representative Candidate for British Landrace
Nigel Overend
Deerpark Pedigree Pigs Landrace Herd was founded in 1958 by the late Robert Overend MBE and is now managed by his son, Nigel. The company opened their own A.I. Station in 1980, the first privately owned A.I. Station in Ireland and subsequently began to successfully freeze and thaw pig semen in straws.
I have had the privilege of being to shows all over the United Kingdom and even as far away as the Royal Adelaide Show in Australia.
I enjoy my role as breed rep trying to help new breeders and encourage new breeders to this wonderful breed. The Landrace is pig that has made its mark all over the world, making it an excellent pig to produce lean fast-growing pigs. The numbers of breeders keeping this breed has fallen over the last twenty years and my aim is to see the number of people keeping pedigree Landrace increase.
I have been active over the past several years recycling several Male lines that are no longer been alive in the Herd book, not only to use in my own herd but to spread the lines around the country. I am working on spreading the female’s lines around the UK to get as more of the genes out to every part of the country.
Breed Representative candidate for the Welsh
Corrina Taylor
I would like to be considered for the role as Welsh breed rep, I have been breeding welsh pigs since 2010 and I would like the opportunity to promote this wonderful breed and encourage both existing and new breeders to try to carry on as many lines as possible through these difficult times.
I am happy to offer advice and support to new breeders and to encourage them to only breed from pigs that meet the breed standard, I also believe it is vital to encourage BPA members to show the Welsh pig if they are in a position to do so in order to raise public awareness about our rare breeds and the benefits of buying British pork and to promote the breed in general.
I think it is important to have a strong support network for the Welsh pig breeder and I am happy to be part of this, I understand the importance of birth notifying litters and only registering pigs that meet with the breed standard, and keeping accurate records of breeding programmes.
I believe I should be elected for the role of breed rep because I have many years experience breeding the welsh pig, I have experience in marketing and promoting the benefits of the welsh pig in the meat industry, I have experience in setting up a butchery on our farm and also a catering business again promoting the Welsh pig, I can offer advice on birth notifications, registering and also have experience with AI.
