Conservation

1. Continue to move sow lines around the country, and more into Scotland and Northern Ireland.
2. Improve number of Lassetter and Ambassador boar lines, by encouraging more breeders around the country to keep these 2 bloodlines, particularly in the Anglian region.
3. Improve the number of Farewell sows, by encouraging more breeders to keep them, particularly in Anglia and Wales.
4. Ongoing monitoring of the breed standard and update via discussion with breed reps and Berkshire Club, and sent to conservation committee for approval when necessary.

1. Protect vulnerable sow lines: Prioritise lines with 0–1 individuals (e.g. Ally, Anne, Asa, Doranda, Johs, Dorina, Naera, Narikka, Ninni and Peta) and aim to increase numbers or breeder participation in at least five of these lines.
2. Strengthen boar line diversity: Increase the number of boar lines with more than one registered animal and reduce reliance on a small number of dominant sires to limit inbreeding.
3. Reduce genetic risk: Implement breeding strategies that improve balance across lines and actively manage inbreeding levels.
4. Improve geographical distribution: Expand the breed into underrepresented regions such as Anglia, Central and the South, supporting new and existing breeders.
5. Consolidate population growth: Continue increasing overall sow and boar numbers while ensuring growth is spread across a wider range of lines rather than concentrated in a few.

1. Encourage breeders to adhere rigorously to the breed standard to maximise the quality of pigs being registered and bred from.

2. Improve fecundity by encouraging breeders to only breed from animals with known good fecundity.

3. Monitor the following male lines - Rajah, Stockbroker and Earl Simon

4. Monitor the following female lines - Octavia, Duchess and Shamrock

5. Encourage breeders to take on one of the above-mentioned male and/or female lines to ensure good geographical spread.

1. To encourage lines that have less than 5 keepers. Need to raise awareness of the lines with less than 9 individuals – Dorothy, Fashion, Flame, Jewel, Julia, Maid, Nocturne, Princess, Skylark and Warbler lines.  On the male lines, the Majestic and Majestic Eagle are both lower in numbers when you remove those with no birth notes.

2. More emphasis will be put on geographical location of lines and we will encourage the breeding of more lines in less represented areas.

3. Encourage keepers to keep good breeding boars and aid their distribution.

1. Carefully monitor Jean, Greenback, Maple and Dainty Girl and encourage breeders to keep these lines. 

 2. Encourage breeders to buy from a variety of sources to keep inbreeding down. 

 3. Spread the geographical locations of Large Whites. 

 4. Look into funding for growth rates and food conversion trials to help with sales of the breed. 

 5. Look to get another boar line in the tank, look at genetically least related.

1. Monitor sow numbers to ensure there is no further decrease in Duchess, Iris and Mary lines whilst ensuring that breed standards are maintained.
2. Encourage ALL members to birth notify all litters and to ensure (as far as possible) that breeding stock is sold to BPA /to breeders willing to become BPA members and breed pedigree.  This will assist with maintaining genetic diversity within the breed.
3. Monitor genetic diversity to ensure that inbreeding levels do not increase.  Educate breeders regarding use of ‘Check Mate’ and seeking advice from breed reps when sourcing breeding stock. Continue to work on the spread of bloodlines and genetics to those regions where additional lines are needed

• Increase the number of Maple breeders so that each sow line is found in at least 10 herds
• Increase the number of Roseleaf, Maple and Lucky Lass sows so that all lines have at least 20 sows
• Move Lucky Lass into Central, NI, Scotland or Wales and Ruby into Anglia, NI, South or Wales so that each sow line is in at least 5 regions
• Monitor boar line numbers overall but especially Glen, Golden Ball, Golden Ranger and Ranger and increase the number of Golden Ball and Ranger boars so that all lines have at least 7 individuals (also increase Glen and GR numbers so they don’t fall below 7)
• Move Yorkshireman to Anglia, Central, NI or Scotland so that each boar line is found in at least 5 regions

To distribute the Willing line to more geographical areas

To improve the numbers of the Flora, Glamorous & Goldilocks lines.

To get more Welsh boar lines into AI asap.

To improve the numbers of Ted and Workman boar lines.
