The Oxford Sandy and Black as seen on TV needs your help

The Oxford Sandy & Black pig as seen on TV is as rare as the Siberian Tiger.  The WWF estimates that there are around 500 Amur Tigers left in the wild. Our latest official census for the Oxford Sandy & Black that will be published by Defra in May shows a population of 456 breeding pigs. Dedicated members of the British Pig Association are working tirelessly to ensure that this wonderful pig does not become extinct.

The British Pig Association is a conservation charity appointed by Defra to run the official herd registry for the Oxford Sandy & Black breed. For the last 20 years, working in partnership with the Oxford Sandy and Black Pig Society and the Rare Breeds Survival Trust we have been building a genebank as an insurance policy against another disaster like Foot and Mouth in 2001.

Our initial target is to have 10 unrelated boars stored in the genebank by the end of this year. We have managed to collect eight so we need two more. Collecting and storing semen from each boar costs £2,500 so we need to raise £5,000.
